Sesto Rocchi è nato a San Polo d'Elsa in provincia di Reggio Emilia il 4- 10- 1909 ed è morto a Reggio Emilia il 20-7-1991. A 14 anni ha costruito il suo primo strumento; nel 1926 si è iscritto alla scuola di liuteria annessa al conservatorio "Arrigo Boito" di Parma, dove insegnava il maestro liutaio Gaetano Sgarabotto. Per approfondire la conoscenza dell'arte liuteria si è recato a Milano dal maestro liutaio Leandro Bisiach che lo ha ospitato nella sua villa a Varese. 11 maestro liutaio Sesto Rocchi è stato premiato nei maggiori concorsi di liuteria, nazionali ed internazionali e, come esperto liutaio, ha fatto parte delle commissioni giudicatrici dei principali concorsi. Trattando in questo libro il tema dei quartetti, ci limitiamo a citare i concorsi inerenti al tema del libro. Nell'anno 1960 a Liegi, al concorso internazionale quartetto a corde "Regina Elisabetta", ha vinto il secondo premio e la targa d'argento. Nell'anno 1962 a Firenze in un concorso di liuteria inserito nella mostra internazionale dell'artigianato, ha vinto una medaglia d'oro per quartetto. Nell'anno 1963 sempre a Liegi, al concorso internazionale per quartetto a corde "Regina Elisabetta", ha vinto il secondo premio e targa d'argento, medaglia d'oro per l'acustica, targa vermeil offerta al liutaio italiano migliore classificato. Nell'anno 1966 a Liegi, ha partecipato con due quartetti al concorso internazionale per quartetto a corde "Regina Elisabetta", vincendo il primo premio acquisto e terzo premio, medaglia d'oro concorso, medaglia d'oro Associazione Liutai Polacchi per la migliore sonorità e medaglia d'oro del presidente A.N.L.A.I per l'acustica. Il quartetto che pubblico in questo libro è accompagnato da un certificato per ogni strumento, n° di registro 25-26-27-28. Quartetto con motto "A Mia Madre" anno di costruzione 1958. Legenda. "Il violino è costruito con legno cecoslovacco a vena larga fondo in due pezzi, fasce come fondo e testa come fondo; coperchio abete vecchio, controfasce in legno di salice, blocchetti di legno salice, catena abete vecchio, (riprodotte varie misura) vernice giallo oro bruno ricetta "B", caratteristica della vernice giallo bruno ad olio, trattamento dello strumento prima di verniciarlo "C.V" sonorità riscontrata a nuovo buonissima. Sempre nel certificato si legge: è il quartetto premiato a Liegi nell'anno 1960 e premiato a Firenze con medaglia d'oro". È stato di proprietà del maestro Paolo Borciani, primo violino del celebre "Quartetto Italiano". Sesto Rocchi was born in San Polo d 'Elsa in the province of Reggio Emilia on the October 4, 1909 and died in Reggio Emilia on July 20, 1991. At the age of 14 he built his first instrument and in 1926 he enrolled in the violin making school of the Conservatory "Arrigo Boito" of Parma where maestro Gaetano Sgarabotto taught. In order to deepen his studies in the art of violin making he moved to Milan and was guest of Leandro Bisiach in his villa at Varese. Master violin maker Sesto Rocchi was awarded in major national and international violin making competitions, and as expert maker he was part of a the judging committee of major competitions. Since the topic of this book concerns quartets we will limit ourselves to cite the competitions that deal with this topic. In 1960 at the International Competition for Quartets "Queen Elizabeth " at Liege, he won second prize and a silver plate. In 1962 in Florence he won a gold medal for a quartet in the violin making competition annexed to the International Artisan Exhibition. In 1963, again at the International Competition for Quartets "Queen Elizabeth " at Liege, he won second prize and silver plate, gold medal for acoustics, Vermeil plate for the best Italian maker classified. In 1966, again at the International Violin Making Competition for quartets "Queen Elizabeth " at Liege, he won first acquisition prize and third prize, gold medal for the competition, gold medal for the Association of Polish Violin Makers, for best sonority, and gold medal president of A.N.L.A.I, for acoustics. The quartet published in this book is accompanied by a certificate for each instrument, registry numbers 25-26-27-28. A quartet with the motto "To My Mother" year of construction 1958. Legenda. The violin is built with Czecoslovakian wood with a wide grain, back of two pieces, ribs and scroll of the same wood as backs. Top plate of old spruce, linings in willow, bass bar of old spruce (Various measurements provided), yellow-golden-brown varnish, recipe "B" which is typical of the yellow brown oil varnish, treatment of the wood prior to varnishing "C. W excellent sonority. Again in the certificate we read: "it is a quartet awarded at Liege in 1960 and awarded in Florence with a gold medal". This belonged to the first violin of the famous "Quartetto Italiano " Paolo Borciani.
